Are we not mammals?

This weekend was the Weapons of Mass Creation Fest. For those of you unaware, it's essentially a three day design, art, music, conference/festival in Cleveland. There were speakers tackling all sorts of topics from branding, design, networking, following your dreams, and so much more! The speakers were from all over the place, all of which are doing beautiful and inspiring things. And then the music! Over 30 bands both local and national acts, including Appleseed Cast, Harvey Pekar, and Braid. I can't believe it took me this many years to see Braid, but it was well worth the wait.

I volunteered at the event yesterday afternoon and it was so much fun. I met so many wonderful people and saw so many of my friends. I've never volunteered before, mostly because I'm incredibly shy and awkward. This, however, wasn't an option yesterday. It was quite nice to gently force myself into being a different kind of person. Especially for such an incredible and wonderful event.

In other new, my boyfriend is out of town and we didn't stock up on photos. So, I had to adventure and do self-portraits with his old camera. Let's just say, I truly admire those that do this all the time. The first set I tried was a complete disaster. It took me twenty minutes to use the tripod alone. I did, however, manage to take these. Not bad for my second attempt.

  1. That bralet is amazing! I've been searching for one too but can't find a nice one. Oh and combining it with that skirt is such a cool idea!

  2. Good job on managing to take the photos on your own. That festival sounds really cool. What kind of event was it that you volunteered for?

  3. Sounds like you had a lot of fun! Maybe I haven't been online lately, but I love the new blog design. Oh, and I always look forward to seeing how you remix this skirt. It's so pretty and versatile.

It's funny how you perceive yourself and how others perceive you. I didn't find you awkward at all! I can understand being shy (I'm totally the same way) but I would have never placed you as awkward.

Oh the tripod. I've become best friends with mine. I find that it's definitely something you become accustomed to. If I had Kevin take my pictures I'm sure it would take three times longer. But I think these pictures turned out wonderful, congratulations!

  6. Nice job with the tripod! I find it incredibly difficult too, I need someone to do my photography for me. Haha, its usually my mom though, and I have to direct her the entire time. She probably thinks I'm the bossiest person on this planet...
Anyway, love the colorful print skirt and your cool beanie!
And that event sounds spectacular, so jealous you got to go. Glad you pushed yourself to do things differently :)

  7. Hooray for self-tripod pictures! They turned out good! I love the fun pattern on your skirt so much.

I'm so jealous that you got to see Braid. I've been listening to them since high school and was so excited when they started making music again. The Weapons of Mass Creation fest sounds awesome!

  8. I love how you rock a beanie with such a girly outfit. You look very feminine with an edge :) Great location too. I wish we had places this green in SoCal.

  9. These photos turned out fantastic!! I HATE MY TRIPOD, ugh, I'm almost considering starting to date again just so I can get someone to take my photos consistently. That's a weird reason haha
LOVE this skirt, such gorgeous colours in it, and perfect with that top. Such a great location too :)

  11. You did a great job with the self photo taking Jessica! And that convention sounds like so much fun! I truly wish Colorado would do more of that stuff. I love your skirt with the pretty minty top!

  12. I'm trying to get a better camera to do more selfies. I'm thinking of maybe a Pentax K20d. I've seen a few within my range, and from what I've seen, they do a pretty decent job. But these photos are amazing! You make the most awesome poses.

I wish they had a festival like that in my state. All we have is Birmingham Fashion Week, which is still a pretty big deal, but still. I love your beanie/dress combos. We do have similar tastes in clothes & style & I love it.

  15. That event sounds so AMAZING. I seriously wish I lived closer and maybe one year will have to make the trip. It sounds so much more up my alley than many design conventions I hear about. You did a great job with the tripod! I remember the first few times how awkward it was and my photos sucked. Now I feel like it's so much faster to take the photos by myself since I don't have my husband cracking jokes the whole time ;) LOVE the skirt- great colors!

  16. The creation fest sounds like such a cool event!!! So glad you had an awesome time :) You look amazing in this outfit, that skirt is just too adorable, and the mint top compliments it perfectly. I really have to learn to use my tripod for outfit photos and give my hubby a break, haha!

  17. I think the photos look great even sans boyfriend. :) The festival sounds really cool. I love artsy-festivals after the first ones I ever went to were very ravey and involved people burning things. In a very non-constructive way.
I had a tripod that was ridiculously old and just fell apart. I need to get a new one and maybe try and teach myself the timer stuff.

  18. Oh that event sounds right up my alley. Definitely one of the things I miss about living near a city. Your photos turned out gorgeous and of course loving the outfit. I have yet to master wearing a slouchy hat with a fancier outfit. You've done it perfectly :-)
