Catalina Fight Song

As much as I love clothes, I have a very complicated relationship with tops. Not shirts so much because I have an entire drawer of band t-shirts, but with actual cute tops to go with my skirt collection. It's not that I don't like tops or that I don't sometimes look for them. It's that I don't know how to. I'm picky. I don't really love constricted necklines or sleeves. Too short of a sleeve is weird too, right? If it's button up, it probably will gap at the chest or be baggy everywhere and then, and then there's the whole thing that tops usually cost more than a dress. A dress is basically an outfit. So...what's the point?

This is my actual thought process and why I am mostly lacking. I have been making an actual effort to look and purchase tops. I generally end up giving them away, but at least I try. This top though? I scored it at the thrift store for a mere $1.50. I didn't expect it to work, but it fit like a glove and I can see potential and unlimited outfits with it. Jamie is our newest Flock Together member and I'm over the moon because she and I are under five feet tall soul sisters. I just made that up, but we are both small and this skirt belongs to her. I realize the shirt is hardly showcased in these photos, but that just gives me an excuse to wear it more often, okay?

This head warmer I am wearing was a gift from my sister, Lisa! She's the best. I send her photos of expensive items I see in the store and she whips up a better version in multiple colors for me. It's the perfect solution to staying warm, stylish and avoiding hat hair.

  1. I like the blue-on-blue pairing and that you found a top you like; they can be tricky!

  2. Yay for being under 5 feet tall soul sisters! I think you styled my skirt wonderfully. (I'm jealous you can wear so many layers.) I actually haven't worn this skirt in forever and have a crap load of skirts so if you want to hang on to it, feel free.

I'm glad you liked my plaid dress! I saw that Elana had the same one up on the swap page too. Surprisingly enough I think it's the same size as the one I just bought. It's kind of a stretchy material so it'll fit a lot of people. But I can always send you mine to borrow too. Either way! The pieces of yours I really want to borrow are your skull and bones dress.and maybe your awesome galaxy dress sometime. And keep letting me know if there's ever something I'm wearing you want to try!

  3. Did you dye your hair? It looks so light in these photos (I love it with all of the snow)! Also, I love how "cool" this outfit looks - both the colors and style! Shopping for tops can be very difficult, but I usually just get one size up, and I'm good to go!

    1. I did NOT dye my hair. I use a purple toning shampoo once a week to brighten up the blonde. It does a beautiful job at toning out the yellow and making it look extra fresh.

And if I size up in tops, it's too baggy everywhere else and then I look sloppy :(

  4. Um why is Lisa so talented with a pair of knitting needles? I agree with Abby - I love the way snow looks in pics (but it's so annoying and cold in real life). -♥- Rachel (For the Birds)

    1. I have no idea! I wish I had her talent! It would surely be a good way to pass the time.

  5. Another super cute knit hat thingy, indeed! Love all the colors here too, white/blue/black is one of my favorites! Works well for winter I think. You look so cozy! And I agree, good tops are tough to find. Let us know if you come up with a system! hah

    1. I wish I had a system. It's more like...does this fit? Is it under $5? Okay, done!

  6. I totally hear you with the top issues. I always mean to find more, but it's just so hard with the gaping buttons and too bit waist or too small shoulders. I'm glad you found something that works so well for you. It definitely opens up your options for more outfits. I love these shades of blue on you, it's really lovely in the snow.

  7. Yes, preach! I have the exact same feeling with tops. It's really hard to find something I like that matches the skirts I own. This outfit is great and I;m so glad you didn't swap this jacket. I really do love it every time you wear it :)

    1. Oh, yeah...the matching skirts you own is a whole other issue in itself.

    2. I never planned to swap this coat!! I was just looking for it in black. I had wanted it in black (I am not a white kind of girl) and I almost bought it on the final sale and my sister told me she had purchased it. I didn't even think to ask if she had gotten the black or white (I assumed it would be black! As all staple pieces for me are) and I just think the white is hard to wear without looking glam/blending with my hair.

  9. You just described my exact sentiments towards shirts! Especially the cost part. And the fitting. I've been gearing towards dresses that can be layered under a skirt and worn as a top, I have better luck with that.

And this outfit is winter perfection! White and blue are wonderful for the season - they remind me of snow and ice. I love your headband, too. I have a similar one, but can't seem to figure out how to style it :S

  10. Button ups are the death of me. Boobs do not agree with that nonsense, but I still try and fail over and over again. Loving your blue on blue and of course, the jacket.

  11. Looking good! And I'm so jealous you have a sister that basically knits things on demand. Can I borrow her? Lol.
