What I'm Watching, Reading & Listening to #10

Saturday, September 30, 2017

It's been forever since I've written one of these posts. Mostly because I haven't been watching much television, but hey, it's almost fall and all my shows are coming back and I'll have EVEN more to discuss!

I had no interest in this show beyond it had eight long seasons and Troian Bellsario's (Spencer Hastings from Pretty Little Liars)husband. I was pleasantly surprised by how well done every aspect of the show was. It's an overly dramatic drama set in a law firm where one of their top junior partners ins't even a lawyer.

Bold Type
I love a good FreeForm drama, but the previews for this looked AWFUL. A friend of mine suggested that I watch it and I was blown away by it. It was smart, funny, timely, and focused on the importance of strong female relationships. I love every aspect of this show and I hope FreeForm doesn't destroy it in a couple seasons like they usually do.

Friends from College
This show has an incredible cast (Keegan-Michael Key, Cobie Smulders, Fred Savage, Billy Eichner), but the reviews were so varied I had no idea what to expect. The entire first season was the exact length of my flight home from LA, so, naturally, I binged the entire season.

Let's get this out of the way -- every single character on this show is awful. Every single thing they do is pretty much shitty, but it's compelling to watch a show when you don't particularly care for anyone. The writing and the acting on this series in incredible and honestly, more shows should focus on how even as adults it's easy to be an absolute fuck-up in every possible regard.

Better Things
This show was created by Pamela Adlon and Louis C.K. and it stars Adlon. It's very much in line with every thing else that C.K. does, but it's stronger. The show focuses on Adlon's character being a single mother to three very headstrong daughters. She's a very flawed person, friend, mother, professional -- but she comes through every goddamn time in her own way. It's full of dry humor, important life lessons, and it deals with a lot of big issues that most "family" centric shows wouldn't dream of tackling.

Science Fiction by Brand New
Brand New has an always will be one of my favorite bands. This record has been seven years in the making. It's everything I dreamed it would be and more. I have not been able to stop listening to this since they surprise dropped this on a random Thursday.
